November 19, 2004 — Enjoy a spa treatment without leaving home. Gretchen Halpin, founder of Soothe for the Senses has three treatments for body scrub, facial cleanser/toner and foot soak that you can create at home.

For The Body
Oatmeal / Avocado Body Scrub
Helps your skin look it's best for those upcoming holiday events. Oatmeal is great for anti-inflammatory and anti-itch. Avocado pulp possess collagen building properties and contains vitamin A,D and E. This mixture is great for irritated, dried skin.

Ingredients and Directions:

  • 1/2 cup dry oatmeal
  • 1 mashed ripened avocado

Make a cheese cloth pouch and fill with oatmeal. Rub the avocado pulp on your body using the oatmeal pouch. Rinse with warm water, gently dry and follow up with a moisturizer.

For The Face
Thyme and Fennel Seed Facial Cleanser
A perfect cure to avoid stress breakouts when your in-laws are coming.

Ingredients and Directions:

  • 1 tablespoon Fresh Thyme
  • 1 tablespoon Fennel Seeds - Crushed
  • Lemon Juice from 1/2 a lemon
  • 1/2 cup Boiling Water

Steep together the thyme, fennel seeds and lemon juice in the boiling water for 15 minutes. Strain and pat on face and neck using a cotton ball. Store excess in refrigerator in a sealed container. The fennel cleanses and tones the skin and helps reduce puffiness. The thyme acts as an astringent and lemon juice is an excellent refresher.

Cranberry and Oregano Toner
Makes you feel and look refreshed with glowing radiant skin, even under the harsh florescent lighting in the shopping malls.

Ingredients and Directions:

  • 1 tablespoon of oregano
  • 1/2 cup of cranberries
  • 1/2 cup of boiling water

Start with oregano in small bowl and cover with boiling water. Steep for 10 minutes, strain and set aside the liquid. Puree cranberries, strain and discard pulp. Combine liquids. Soak cheesecloth in liquids and place over face for 10 minutes. Careful around eye area. The cranberries have a natural acidity and works as a toner. The oregano draws out excess oils.

For the Feet
Sage and Chamomile Foot Soak
Soothing and refreshing after long hours of shopping on your feet.

  • 1 cup of fresh sage - chopped
  • 4 chamomile tea bags
  • 10 cups of water

Simmer for 30 minutes on your stove. Strain and throw out solids. When water is comfortable - pour into basin and enjoy your foot soak. The chamomile softens your skin, while the sage draws out toxins and relieves inflamed feet. Moisturize with olive oil.
